Packing:
Don't wait till the last minute to start packing.
Pack rooms with less frequently used items first.
Pack heavier items in small boxes, lighter items in larger boxes.
Put the heaviest items in the bottom of the boxes.
Try to keep boxes under 40lbs.
Use newsprint, bubble wrap, and other padding materials. The materials are much less expensive than the items they protect.
Use dish pack boxes to pack your dishes. Wrap dishes individually and stand them on end in the box.
Fill each box ¾ full, use wadded up newsprint to fill the rest of the box.
Boxes should neither bulge nor cave in.
Be sure to tape both ends of the boxes. Use at least 3 strips of tape to seal each end.
Clearly label the contents and room for each box with a marker. Mark them on the side (not the top) so they are readable when stacked.
You can use trash bags to pack pillows and linens. Also pack essentials in a suitcase to keep with you.

Furniture:
Take everything off the tops of furniture.
Use shrink-wrap to protect couches, dressers, and other large furnishings for transport. But do not use shrink wrap on leather or suede.
You can leave all non-breakable items in the drawers of your furniture. Pack all other items into boxes.
Remove legs from furniture if possible.
Anything to disassemble, remember to tape the screws to the piece.
Do not put tape on finished or painted wood. |
|
Electronics:
Disconnect all electronics.
Color code and label wires for easy reinstallation.
Secure all cords to prevent damage.
Pack into original box if possible.
Double box fragile items. |
|
Appliances:
Turn off water and gas on all appliances. Drain all hoses.
Unplug all appliances and tape the cord to the back.
Immobilize the washer tub by placing towels between the tub and the side wall.
Empty out your refrigerator and freezer, defrost and allow to dry.
Linens can be stored in the dryer. |
|
Lamps and Décor:
Remove all bulbs and shades from lamps.
Wrap the cords around the bottom of the lamp.
